Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Founded by Quakers from the USA in the decade of 40′s whose found a safe land in this country without an army, it was chosen by its founding fathers for its cool climate in aid of dairy farming. Nowadays the town is moving towards eco-tourism as a more sustainable income source.
Monteverde is to about 172 km to the northwest of San José in the Mountain range of Tilarán, to a height approximated of 1200 to 1500 meters on the level of the sea. Monteverde has a population of approximately 5000 people. The temperature daily average is of 15° to 24° C, with one season dry of January to April and the season of rain that lasts from May to November. It is located in the continental division of Costa Rica. The climatic and geographic conditions that are from this phenomenon are the base for the enormous variety of species and the particular vegetation.
The reserve includes an extension of 10.500 hectares of earth and maintains six different zones from life. The climate and the land of the reservation produce an incredible biodiversity. There are at least 400 species of birds in highest part of the rain forest; it includes the sacred bird of Mayan the Quetzal. More than 100 species of mammals, 120 species of amphibians and reptiles, and approximately 2.500 species of plants, that makes of Monteverde a true paradise for the lovers of the birds. The reserve has stations humid and dry, although the highest parts have fog and rains much during the year.
More than 400 species of delicate orchids, they embellish the branches of the majestic trees. Their colors, whites, lilacs and yellows, contrast of incredible way with the green emerald of the forest.
Near the reserve, some places also deserve attention during the stay in Santa Elena who is located between the Reserves of Monteverde and Sta. Elena, departure point for all the attractions of the area.
As it is it the Eternal Forest of the Children, the first rainy forest for the children at international level in the world, the garden of butterflies and the gallery of hummingbirds.
A new and spectacular form to see the forests in the heights, without making much physical effort is the "Skywalk" (Long walk by the sky), which is made by a series of footpaths connected with suspension bridges to more than 130 feet, allowing an spectacular forest view.
