National Bird (Yigüirro)
It was decreed National Bird in January 3 of 1977, under the presidency of the Lic. Daniel Oduber Quirós. It was declared thus, as a tribute to its powerful and melodious song that accompanies the entrance of the rainy season. In addition it was considered as an important personage within folklore, literature and music of Costa Rica.
Its scientific name is Turdus Grayi. It can also be called as Brown Mirlo and can measure approximately between 22 and 24 centimetres. As much the male, as the female has identical plumages, of a yellowish brown colours, a little clearer in the throat and belly. The iris have reddish brown colour, the beak is yellowish and the legs are greyish.
This bird lives specially in open places. It is fed of several classes of fruits that take from the trees. Also it frequently walks on the ground investigating with his beak and gathering earthworms, snails, worms, insects, etc. It has been found solely in America, where it lives from the northeast of Mexico to the north of Colombia, places in where receive diverse names, for example, cas-cas in Panama.
